PANUBOK X UKAY: AN ADAPTATION by EyeCan CreativesFilm Length: 6:41

This short film highlights the cultural and artistic traditions of the Panay-Bukidnon, an Indigenous community residing in the mountainous region of Panay Island in the Visayas. Central to the film is Panubok, the community’s traditional embroidery practice, whose motifs draw from nature and the Sugidanon—a rich oral literature composed of epic tales of heroic deeds and mythical beings.

The film traces how Panubok, once reserved for ceremonial garments, has evolved into a contemporary form of expression—stitched onto unexpected surfaces like imported secondhand clothing sourced from ukay-ukay markets. This narrative of cultural adaptation and continuity is told through the personal story of Rennel Lavilla, a master manunubok (embroiderer), and his mother, whose enduring love and devotion to the craft illuminate the intergenerational transmission of heritage.
