Iligan City, a major urban and industrial center in Lanao del Norte, is home to over 360,000 residents and serves as a vital economic and logistical hub in Northern Mindanao. With a diverse population that includes both long-term residents and internally displaced persons from nearby Marawi, the city faces growing challenges in sanitation and waste management.
During its fieldwork, the UKAI Initiative documented significant volumes of imported secondhand clothing at ukay-ukay stores in the city. These findings shed light on the scale and complexity of secondhand textile flows—particularly as they intersect with patterns of urban expansion, informal economies, and local waste systems.
