Marawi City, the capital of Lanao del Sur in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), is home to over 200,000 residents, the majority of whom are Maranao Muslims. Amid ongoing reconstruction following the 2017 siege, the city continues to grapple with persistent challenges related to poverty, inadequate infrastructure, and waste management.
Like many urban centers in Mindanao, Marawi hosts ukay-ukay (secondhand clothing) markets, which serve as a vital source of affordable apparel, particularly for low-income communities. As part of its fieldwork, the UKAI Initiative visited one such site and documented the significant volume of imported used clothing, underscoring the scale and complexity of secondhand textile flows into post-conflict urban environments.
